How to Create a Graph:
- The x-axis is the independent variable (i.e. the variable that you manipulate - time is almost always independent).
- The y-axis is the dependent variable (i.e. the variable that changes as a result of you changing in the independent variable).
- Make the graph as big as possible (i.e. use as much of the paper as you can).
- Use uniform spacing and numbering along the axes (you cannot begin numbering by 1's then switch to 5's)
- If there are multiple lines going on the same graph, make sure to include a legend or label the lines.
- Include a title (Dependent Variable vs Independent Variable).
- Make sure to label both axes, including units where appropriate.
- It's ok to use a graph break, but it must be indicated. (click here to see www.virtualnerd.com/pre-algebra/probability-data-analysis/displaying-data/graphs-displays/bar-graph-interpret-break )
- Need to make one using Excel? Here's a link to a NCSU website that walks you through that process: http://www.ncsu.edu/labwrite/res/gt/graphtut-home.html
